Hola my friends, Coop here with an update on the Royal Fire that’s been giving our community a serious scare. As many of you know, the fire started on July 7 in the Royal Gorge area, just west of Truckee. The current status: 215 acres burned and 15% containment. It’s been a tough few days, but our incredible firefighting teams are making steady progress.

A Challenging Battle: More than 400 fire personnel are on the front lines, fighting this blaze with everything they’ve got. We’ve got ground crews and aerial support working around the clock. One of the game-changers has been the night-capable, water-dropping aircraft. These planes, along with night area supervision, have been crucial in keeping the fire from spreading further. Roger Caballero, the air support lead, couldn’t stress enough how important these resources have been.

Current Situation: Right now, the fire is holding at 215 acres with 15% containment. The terrain is rugged, and the dry conditions aren’t helping, but our teams are relentless. They’re determined to protect our homes, businesses, and those beloved ski resorts like Soda Springs, Donner Ski Ranch, and Sugar Bowl that are perilously close to the fire’s path.

Evacuations and Safety Measures: Evacuation orders are in place for affected areas. If you’re in these zones, please comply and stay safe. The fire’s proximity to major highways, including Interstate 80, is a critical concern. It could affect travel and evacuation routes, so stay informed and be ready to move if necessary.

Weather Conditions: The weather isn’t doing us any favors. High temperatures ranging from 85º to 95°F and shifting winds make for challenging firefighting conditions. We’ve got a Heat Advisory in effect until Friday morning, which only adds to the fire risk. Everyone needs to be extra cautious.

Community Awareness and Preparedness: Having lived through the Caldor, Tamarack, and Angora fires, I can tell you this isn’t our first rodeo. The bravery and dedication of our firefighting teams are truly commendable. Our community’s support is vital. We all need to exercise extreme caution when camping and recreating in and around the Tahoe Basin. The wildfire risk in Northern California is ever-present, and preventive measures are crucial to safeguarding our homes and communities. Remember, every small action counts in preventing these devastating events.

Stay Updated: For the latest information, tune into 101.5 Truckee Tahoe Radio or stream it online. JD and his team are committed to keeping us updated as often as needed. They’re doing a fantastic job, so let’s support them by staying informed and following their advice.

Resources and Further Information:

Stay informed, stay safe, and let’s stand together to protect our beautiful region. We’ve been through tough times before, and we’ll get through this one too.
